“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. is is my command: Love each other.”

“Then He called the crowd to Him along with His disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
— John 15:15-17, Mark 8:34

Think it through

1. Disciples usually chose a rabbi to follow, but Jesus called his disciples to follow Him and they had to choose whether or not to follow him. How do you feel knowing that Jesus gave you the opportunity to choose to follow him?

2. Jesus says in this passage that he appointed us “to go and bear fruit.” What does that mean for you? How do you think God wants you to “bear fruit?”

Thank you, Lord, for giving me the privilege of serving you in the world, of using the gifts you have given me to bear fruit in the lives of others. Let me not forget that I am called to proclaim your glory and not my own. I ask that you give me everything I need to do the work you have set before me.
